What’s it about?
This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to paint, refinish, repair and maintain painted surfaces to a range of automotive vehicles, recreational vehicles and other vehicles within the automotive industry. This qualification may also cover non-automotive which may include industrial machinery and tools.

The Certificate III in Automotive Refinishing Technology is intended to prepare new employees or recognise and develop existing workers who are painting and maintaining painted surfaces on a range of vehicles and non-vehicle applications.

Pathways into the qualification
Credit will be granted towards this qualification to those who have completed AUR20916 Certificate II in Automotive Body Repair Technology or other relevant qualifications.

Further training pathways from this qualification include AUR40716 Certificate IV in Automotive Body Repair Technology or other relevant qualifications.
What needs to be completed?
30 units of competency are required to complete this qualification within the specific requirements as set out below:
17 core units + 13 elective units, of which:
- up to 13 elective units may be chosen from the elective units listed in the units of competency brochure
- up to 5 elective units may be chosen from a Certificate II qualification or above in this Training Package or another endorsed Training Package or accredited course, provided that the units chosen contribute to the vocational outcome of this qualification and do not duplicate the outcome of another unit chosen for the qualification.
Okay, so how do I do it?
Work Skills delivers all its qualifications and units of competency through blended learning, comprising face-to-face, one-on-one training with a Work Skills trainer. This may also include utilising CDs, DVDs, textbooks, learning guides, the internet, the phone and the Work Skills Online Learning and Assessment System, WOLAS. The learning may comprise all or some of these methods. It will depend on location, pace that student wants to learn, and employer requirements. This is all negotiated at the first checkpoint meeting.
Option One: One-on-One Training
You can have the training as an individual. This allows you to have the training delivered at your own pace in a timeframe that suits you. We come to you and deliver training that fits into your work/life requirements. All assessments are completed at a pace that suits your needs.
Option Two: Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
If you’ve had lots of experience in this industry or similar in the past, you may be eligible for RPL.
Recognition of Prior Learning means that you don’t require training. Instead, you just need to be assessed on each unit. You will need to draw on all your past experiences so that you can demonstrate that you have already acquired the knowledge and skills. You may be eligible for some units through the RPL process whilst other units may require some training.
